| Description |
|
Founded in 1882, the city was named for E.P. Lufkin, the chief
of the crew that surveyed the Houston East and West Texas Railroad
that went through the town. There were many depots to serve the
logging railroads that went through the town. Lufkin became a center
for the booming lumber industry, and no fewer than twenty mills-sawmills,
plywood mills and paper mills have been located in or adjacent to
the city limits. The US Forests in Texas, the Texas Forestry Association,
and the Texas Forest Service Fire Control are all headquartered
in Lufkin. Today, Lufkin serves as a regional manufacturing and commerce center
and produces paper and wood products, oilfield pumps, trailers,
and foundry castings.
Marker Location: Kiwanis Park, US Business 59S at Tulane Street
