| Description |
|
William Broyles built this home for his wife Caroline
in 1895. Following the arrival of the railroad, he established the
first mercantile store in the new County Seat. In 1878, Broyles
began a lumber business, which included a steam mill, lumberyard,
and cabinet shop. This mill was known at different times as the
George D. Broyles Lumber Company, Wright & Broyles, and B.F.W.
Broyles. Broyles’ lumber mill played an important role in
building the economic strength of Palestine. The mill stayed in
use until 1934. The Broyles home was designed by a local architect
and is an example of Italian, Queen Anne, and Second Empire styles.
The marker is located at 1305 Sycamore St. in Palestine.
