County: Newton
City: Newton
Website: http://www.9key.com/markers/marker_detail.asp?atlas_number=5351011122

Description
Located in the easternmost county of Texas, Newton was little more than a forest of oaks and beeches when laid out in 1853. The Orange and Northwestern RR, finished in 1905, brought growth and prosperity to Newton. Sawmills provided employment; as did plants for manufacturing baskets, turpentine, tool handles, and furniture.
