Description
Many of Newton County communities got their names as well as their existence from the sawmill industry. The legend of the Newton County town known as Fawil is interesting. The story says that in 1906 the sawmiller, Fonzo A. Wilson, tried to paint his name on a short board to hang on the front of his sawmill. However, he got as far as his two initials and the first three letters of his surname, before he ran out of board. When the railroad came through, “FAWIL” was adopted as the name of the switch installed there."
