Description  

Shankleville was named for Jim and Winnie Shankle, known as the first Newton Co. blacks to buy land and become local leaders after gaining freedom. They bought up to 4,000 acres. In their neighborhood were prosperous farms, churches, schools, cotton gins, sawmills, and gristmills.

Marker located 3.5 mil SW of Burkeville, via SH 63 W to FM 1415 South.
