These
springs, used by settlers prior to 1850, became the center of a thriving
farm community and health resort in the 1880s. The town included a
post office, gin, sawmill, stores and school. The Geo and Martin Gillespie
sawmill was established in Midyett in 1905, when the town’s
population was only 98 people. The mill produced lumber for 11 years
until it was mortgaged off to the Panola County saw millers. As timber
became scarce after WW I, Midyett declined and was consolidated into
Carthage school district in the 1940s.
