The town of Crockett was founded in 1837. It was named for David Crockett, who had visited here on his way to the Alamo. An old fortified log courthouse was often the refuge for settlers during Indian wars. During the Civil War Crockett served as a camp of instruction for the Confederate forces. In 1872, the Houston and great Northern Railroad was built through Houston County, thus assuring its place as a regional trading center and spurring the growth of the lumber industry in the region. Marker is located on the east side of the courthouse square in Crockett
