Houston East & West Texas Railroad
Chartered in 1875, this narrow-gauge railroad was at a distinct disadvantage until 1894, when it converted to a standarg gauge. It began construction in 1879, running from Houston to Shreveport. About 1880, it was building from Humble to Cleveland. In 1882, it had reached Lufkin. Some sawmill towns on it were Porter, New Caney, and Splendora. Clinesburg was only a short distance. It crossed the Louisiana border at Logansport, where it joined the Houston, Shreveport, and Chesapeake. The gauge was converted to standard in 1894.
