The Wingate and Lynch mill operated for nine months during the census year ending May 31, 1880. It was valued at $2,500 and the owners paid from $1.00 to $3.00 per day to twenty-five employees (including three children under the age of sixteen]. The work day was eleven hours. Skilled labor could earn $3.00 daily and unskilled $1.00. The total wages paid were $2,250. Wingate and Lynch did their own logging “around the mill.” From $4,600 in mill supplies and sawlogs, the mill produced 1,500,000 board feet for a gross value of $15,000.
