According to census records for the year ending June 1, 1850, Peters and Hays had $2000 invested in a sawmill somewhere in Bowie County. The mill had $288 in logs and mill supplies. They employed nine men and one woman, the men making $12 per month each and the woman $8 per month. It produced 78,200 feet of pine lumber, valued at $9384, during the year.
