According to census records for the census year ending June 1, 1850, Avery & Day ran the only steam powered mill in Cherokee County. Their saw and grist mill was valued at $2000. Raw materials included 1560 logs ($580) and 15,600 bushels of corn ($9,360). During the census year they manufactured 39,000 feet of “plank” (valued at $480) and 18,200 bushels of meal ($10,920). They employed six men at $16 each per month.
