D. A. Barron

Both L. Moore and F. Cartwright remembered a “Barrins” mill that operated in southwestern Cherokee County in the 1930s. Moore stated it was located between Wells and Alto. Cartwright believed it was two miles north of Wildhurst, operated until the 1930s, and had a gasoline-powered, portable, circular sawmill. Cartwright also stated that the plant had a commissary and tenant houses. Grady Felder recalled that D. A. Barron “had little mills all over that country down there [meaning Forest and Wildhurst]. After he got too old to run the sawmill then, he started buying timber and would hire logging contractors to put it out for him. Old man Barron had a pretty good-sized operation at one time. . . . down at Forest.”
