Brunswick Lumber Company
American Lumberman reported on June 9, 1906 that the Brunswick Lumber Company controlled about six million feet of lumber and intended to put up a small mill at Morrill. Local historical memory or tradition has little about this mill According to H. C. Polk, Jr., his father worked at the mill located at “the Morrill Orchard” shoeing horses for the outfit. Polk is probably referring to Morrill Orchard Company, a very large fruit company which required its own tram and switching operations as well as a crate and basket factory.
Cherokee County registers record that Brunswick Lumber Company mortgaged in January 1907 with Joe Clevenger for a Hoyt planer and a knife grinder. In July 1907, Brunswick Lumber Company mortgaged with the Lufkin National Bank for $2,500, the collateral being “the sawmill plant & all bldgs & all lbr.” A notation in the county register reveals the lien was canceled on May 20, 1909.
