In 1899, C. M. Burke and E. Burke either sold or mortgaged with J. D. Sitliff for $802 six oxen, one log wagon, a 25-horsepower boiler, a 9-inch by 12-inch steam engine, a shingle machine, two 30-inch shingle saws, a rip saw, a cutoff saw, a cotton gin and presses.
C. M. Burke operated a shingle mill in 1900, probably just north of the Cherokee County line in Angelina County. He sold the entire output of a nearby sawmill to Arkansas Lumber company in June, 1900, for $6,115 to Arkansas Lumber Company and contracted to provide his shingle cut to Arkansas Lumber for the next twelve months.
That sawmill may have belonged to T. W. Brozetter, for in 1900 Brozetter sold such a mill to F. J. Ward for $1,962. The equipment included a 12-inch by 16-inch, 40-horsepower steam engine, a 44-inch by 14-foot boiler, a sawmill with a circular saw, a 24-foot carriage, two blocks, a Kelly duplex feed mill, a planer mater with a single surfacer, a log wagon, nine oxen, a 3-saw edger, and a #2 sawmill carriage.
Burke sold for $390 his Mich. shingle machine for $390 to T. W. Brozetter.
