J. T. Gray & Co.

John and L. F. Gray owned a steam-powered, circular sawmill site in Beat No. 4 of Marion County, about three miles northeast of Jefferson, on the land of D. Alley, deceased. The 1870 Census enumerated the sawmill's worth at $2,500 in 1870 with raw materials worth $6,000. The Grays employed twelve men to whom they paid a total wage of $6,000 over seven months. The mill produced 1,900,000 feet of lumber worth $19,000. By 1871, sole proprietorship invested in John Gray.
