Spiller is listed as a sawmill owner in the 1880 Census, living in Precinct 1, Res. 343. He employed eight people.
In 1907, he and W. F. Spiller sold more than 2.2 million feet of stumpage to Big Tree Lumber Company, which had a plant at Alonso, two or three miles north, just across the Walker County line.
