Durham
The Thomas E. Durham sawmill south of Hallsville was on the tracks of the Texas & Pacific. A tram line was laid to the mill about 1889. Two mules were used to tow a car over a wooden railroad; the tracks were made mostly of sweetgum. Later, steel rails were laid, and a small 10-ton Shay was acquired. The Shay would push one car and tow another in order to facilitate climbing hills. The new tram line's name was the “Great Sweetgum, Yubadam, & Hoo Hoo Route.”
