John Reid ran a small, water-powered saw and grist mill in Nacogdoches County in 1860. In the census taken during that year, he reported $500 invested in the mill. He also reported to have manufactured 40,000 feet of lumber (worth $400) during the year and paid two employees fifty dollars a month in wages.
