The Burkeville Sawmill
According to W. T. Block, the noted sawmill historian from Nederland, Texas, Burkeville, about two miles from Wiergate, is one of the oldest communities in Newton County. Several forest-related industries have been located at Burkeville, including a possible sawmill around 1909, the name of which has not survived. It may have been the plant of the Buffalo Lumber Company of E. F Montgomery, L. J. Miller, E. A. Griggs, and L. S. McMahon, with an authorized capital of $20,000.
