Sabine Tram Company logging camp
Laurel, in Newton County, was the location of a Sabine Tram Company logging camp from 1889 to 1893, according to Webb. Sabine Tram moved logging operations seven miles to the northwest in 1893. Articles in the early 1900s indicate that the company may have begun logging operations again in 1904. The camp was named after Laurel Gilmer, daughter of Alexander Gilmer and wife of one of the Sabine Tram Company's stockholders.
