Southern Trees Lumber Company
Bud Thompkins sold a sawmill outfit to G. H. Jones, according to Panola County records, in 1940. It was located on Carol Chadwick's farm, south of Carthage. Equipment sold included the sawmill, the steam engine (but not the boiler or carriage cable), belts, pulleys, an edger, a cut-off saw, dust chains, two saws, and other items.
In April, 1941, George H. Jones and Ludwell Easley either bought equipment or mortgaged equipment from Albert P. Garland, a lumberman with offices at Shreveport. The sum was $1,631.75, and the equipment, located on Chadwick's farm, included the complete sawmill (except boiler and carriage and cable) and a planing mill.
By August, 1941, Jones and Easley had formed the Southern Trees Lumber Company, which mortgaged for a complete planing mill rig with Woodward, Wright & Co of Louisiana in the sum of $1563.80.
