Marshall Rainy (Cainy) Mill

The Manuscript Census of 1880, reporting for June 1, 1879, to May 31, 1880, detailed the business operations of the Marshall Rainy (Cain?) Mill sawmill for the twelve months of its operation. The sawmill, d a capital value of $4,500, employed ten men at peak and five men normally. The employees received daily wages of $1.25 to $2.50 for nine hour days in the winters and ten hour days in the summer. The business paid a total wage of $2,800 to its workers.
The sawmill had a business relationship with George W. Coit's brick and tile firm, which employed three men and three children at a daily wage of $.75 for ten-hour shifts.
