The firm of Mitchell and McGowen operated a sawmill in Cold Springs in 1880, according to The Lumberman's Directory of Saw Mills, Shingle Mills and Other Wood Working Factories in the Northwest, South, and Southwest. In 1892, W. D. Mitchell and J. F. McGowan mortgaged to R. W. Finley a steam engine and boiler.
