Smith sawmill

James Smith's steam sawmill in Rusk County manufactured 832,000 feet of lumber (valued at $11,120) during the census year ending June 1, 1850. Smith employed twelve men, paid $300 per month in wages, and had $6000 invested in his mill. The small sawmill ran on a steam engine and was d a capital value in the 1860 Census of $5,000. Eight men, paid a total monthly wage of $250, produced 800,000 feet of lumber and 100,000 feet of sheathing for a value of $8,500.
