The Zeagler family of Lufkin had sawmilling interests in Angelina and San Augustine counties and also owned the Martin Wagon Company, the premier constructor of eight-wheel logging wagons for the logging industry. According to the The Gulf Coast Lumberman, on August 15, 1925, Martin Wagon Company had a sawmill plant at Veach, in San Augustine County, and the Kurth-Zeagler Lumber Company had been formed to buy out and financially rescue the operation. The Zeaglers, who used the offices of Martin Wagon Company regularly for business meetings, met there with E. L. Kurth and formed the new company.
Kurth-Zeagler Lumber Company gave its first operating statements in October, 1925. It was listed in the Southern Lumberman's Directory of American Saw Mills and Planing Mills edition of 1928 as a band sawmill working with hardwoods and yellow pine. The mill was at Veach while the post office was at White City. The company town had a light plant and a “picture show.” Strapac noted that Martin Wagon Company was operating on its logging tram road one of the old Alexander Gilmer Lumber Company steam locomotives.
The Great Depression forced the company to close the mill.
