Lewis and Horry

The 1880 Special Schedules of Manufactures, Schedules 5 and 6, list Lewis & Horry as operating a sawmill industry with a capitalization of $1200. Operating on an eight-hour daily summer and winter schedule, the four men employees were paid at the rate of $1.50 a day for a skilled mechanic and $.75 a day for unskilled labor. During peak production, the mill employed five personnel, all men. The annual wages paid totaled $600 for six operational months. Raw materials were valued at $1.65K for logs and $150 for mill supplies. The mill produced 325,000 feet of lumber for a total value of $3,250.
