The 1880 Special Schedules of Manufactures, Schedules 5 and 6, list Riley & Smith as operating a sawmill industry with a capitalization of $1000. Operating on a ten-hour daily summer and an eight-hour daily winter schedule, the five employees were paid at the rate of $1.00 a day for a skilled mechanic and $.75 a day for unskilled labor. The annual wages paid totaled $200 for three operational months. Raw materials were valued at $835 for logs and $100 for mill supplies. The mill produced 167,000 feet of lumber for a total value of $1,670.
