Daniel Lumber Company
A letter from William Fleming Daniel to F. W. Cook, San Antonio, reveals that Daniel Lumber Company operated and owned a sawmill at Kountze. Dated September 28, 1913, on Daniel Lumber Company letterhead, the letter states the mill had a daily capacity of 35,000 feet at the sawmill and 40,000 feet at the planer, producing rough and dressed lumber, railroad and mining timber. The Daniel Lumber Company at Kountze was the successor to Daniel & Wintz Lumber Company. After the close of World War I, the resulting recession hurt the company. Lufkin Foundry & Machine Company received a judgment and lien against the W. F. Daniel mill in Hardin County, in January, 1919. The Daniel Lumber Company relocated to Angelina County at Chancy Switch, where they were sawmilling by the following July.
