Levi Garrett's first shingle business at Joaquin terminated by March, 1904. During that month, his shingle machine, known as the “Levi Garrett” shingle mill, was the object of Deed of Trust by J. N. McMeekin and David Patrick. The shingle mill was located three and one half miles north of Joaquin.
Levi Garrett and Jay Maxwell operated another small shingle machine company at Joaquin in opposition to I. F. Miller and T. E. Jones of Center during the latter part of twentieth century's first decade. Their equipment consisted of a shingle mill, an Atlas 9-inch by 14-inch steam engine and an Atlas 36-inch by 12-ft boiler, a bolting machine, two shingle presses, and shingle saws. They apparently did not uphold their mortgage obligations, for they did not appear in Reference Book of the Lumbermen's Credit Association, January 1907. Several days before Christmas in 1909, J. H. Goodwin transferred Garrett's mortgage and his shingle machine from Garrett to I. F. Miller, thus officially terminating the business of Garrett and Maxwell.
