Stuwig, according to the 1860 Census, operated a multi-mill combination producing lumber, meal, and flour. He had $2,000 invested in the sawmill and $6,000 in the grist mill. He paid four men a total monthly wage of $100 in lumber operations, and four men $110 monthly at the grist mill. His raw materials included $5,000 in trees, $16,000 in corn, and $2,000 in wheat. The mills manufactured 800,000 feet of lumber worth $10,000, 18,780 bushels of meal worth $18,700, and 400 bushels of flour worth $2,500.
