In 1880, the Thomas S. McSpadden sawmill was enumerated in Precinct 5 in the Census of that year. It had a capital value of $3,000. It employed twelve men at peak production and eight men normally. They were paid $1.00 per day for unskilled labor and $2.00 for skilled, working eleven-hour shifts in the summer and nine-hour shifts in the winter. McSpadden paid $1,500 in total for wages. From $5,500 in supplies and sawlogs, the sawmill manufactured 900,000 feet of lumber worth $9,000 in three months of fulltime operations.
