The Walker County Deed Records witness that a sawmill company by the name of Clark & Roark existed in Walker County before 1900. The firm had had mortgaged some of the equipment to John T. Smithers sawmill firm that Smithers had recovered in an auction in front of the court house on February 3, 1891. The property had been in the hands of Hays & Webb sawmill firm of Walker County.
