J. M. Smith's sawmill appeared in Rand McNally and Company's 1884 directory of lumber mills. The mill was situated in the town known as Coltharp, the same town where Jesse H. Ratcliff's lumber and shingle mills were located. The mill was located at least eighteen miles from the railroad at Crockett.
