Louisiana-Pacific, Inc.

In November, 1969, Owens-Illinois announced that it was building a plywood plant and an integrated woods product complex at Jasper. The plant would employ 200 workers with a payroll of $6,300,000. The daily capacity would be 200,000 square feet of plywood. The plant planned to begin operations at the end of January, 1971. Management included George B. Gribble, general manager; George H. Middleton, production manager; and James N. Turpin, manager of wood processing. It was located on a 70-acre site on Highway 63 East in a 200,000 square foot facility. It employed 200 workers who could produce 100 million square feet of plywood with the ability to expand production to 150 million square feet. Products were sheathing grade plywood and and high-quality sanded plywood. In January, 1973, Owens-Illinois announced that the plywood plant had 295 employees. It also announced that it would construct a stud mill to produce high-grade wood studs. This plant would be housed in three buildings: the first having a chip and saw mill cutting 2x4x8' studs; the second having the planer mill; and the third would house the kiln. New workers would total 50. The plant produced twenty million square feet in 1973 and had added a chip mill. Louisiana-Pacific later purchased the plant. By 1987, Louisiana-Pacific was operating two pine mills at Jasper: one site producing lumber and the other site producing plywood sheathing with a medium plywood sawmill and a large lumber sawmill. One cut plywood sheathing and studs, while the other was cutting lumber and softwood plywood. Production continued into the 1990s. Jim Stubbs and E. R. Journee were the site managers. Some of the operation were combined, and by 1990, one plant was making softwood plywood products, common and select boards, dry dimension, dry studs, and timbers. Bill Norrington was managing 398 employees, working with loblolly, making common and select boards, dry dimension, dry studs, timbers in 1993. The plant produces forty million sq-ft. yearly.
